Baobab – Africa's tree of life

The baobab, also known as the monkey bread tree, is an impressive plant deeply rooted in African landscape and culture. This tree, botanically classified as Adansonia, belongs to the mallow family (Malvaceae) and comprises several species found mainly on the African continent, but also in Australia and Madagascar. The best-known representative of this genus is Adansonia digitata, the African baobab.

Origin and classification

Originally, the baobab comes from the dry, hot savannas of Africa, where it withstands extreme environmental conditions. Thanks to its ability to store large amounts of water in its massive trunk, the baobab can survive long periods of drought. This adaptability makes it a vital component of the ecosystem.

Baobab - Species and other names

There are several species of baobab trees that differ slightly in shape, size and habitat. In addition to the African baobab, the Madagascar baobab (Adansonia madagascariensis) and the Australian baobab (Adansonia gregorii) are also known, for example. In different cultures the tree also has different names, including "tree of life" or "bottle tree" due to its characteristic bottle-shaped trunk.

Components of the baobab fruit

The fruit of the baobab is an important source of food and medicine. It is rich in vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, potassium and important dietary fibres. The baobab fruit also contains significant amounts of antioxidants, making it a valuable component in nutrition and natural health care.
Baobab seeds are highly valued for their versatility and rich components. They are also suitable for the production of oils, such as our baobab oil, which is known for its nourishing properties.
