The rosemary plant (Rosmarinus officinalis)
Rosemary belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is native to the Mediterranean region. The evergreen plant grows up to two metres tall and is recognisable by its needle-like leaves and pale blue to violet flowers. It loves sunny locations with well-drained, calcareous soil.
In herbal medicine, rosemary is traditionally used in a variety of ways. Its components such as 1,8-cineole, camphor, borneol, rosmarinic acid and flavonoids are considered stimulating, circulation-promoting and skin-cleansing. Rosemary is particularly widely used in aromatic care for its fresh, herbal fragrance.
Hydrosols & their production
Hydrosols are formed as a by-product during the distillation of essential oils. Fresh plant material is passed through with steam. The oil- and water-soluble components that are released condense together. The hydrosol is the aqueous phase which, in addition to traces of essential oils, also contains fine plant active compounds.
Hydrosols are particularly mild as they contain no alcohol and are therefore excellent for sensitive skin types and for versatile use in natural cosmetics. They are popular as toners, body sprays, for body care or as room sprays.
Cultivation & processing on our own farm
Our rosemary grows on sunny fields in Demeter-certified mixed cultivation. The careful cultivation without synthetic agents, the hand-harvesting and the direct processing in our own farm manufactory guarantee a particularly pure and high-quality product. Thanks to the gentle distillation, the living plant water is preserved with all its properties.
